Detroit Royalty and Snapshots

November 1, 2024 - November 31, 2024

Two artists with uniquely different approaches and styles are featured together partly because of their common bond: Detroit-bred rock and roll.

“Detroit Royalty” is a collection of prints and paintings from Niagara and “Snapshots” is a photographic retrospective of the late Sigrid Dobat.

A successful and world-recognized artist for decades, Niagara was a force in the Detroit rock and punk scenes of the 1970s and '80s. She fronted the bands Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival, which featured Ron and Scott Asheton of the Stooges. For this show, she has exhibited new originals and prints, many with her signature femme fatale style.

Photographer Sigrid Dobat's exhibit features rare, old photographs of recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees the MC5 as well as snaps from around the globe. The German-born photographer moved to Detroit with her family in 1957 and started taking photos and becoming part of the local art and music scene at a young age. Dobat, who died in July, was married to MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith from 1969-1980.
